Opposition candidates file their election expenses By Hetty Musfirah Abdul Khamid | Posted: 13 June 2011 1532 hrs SINGAPORE: For some candidates, it was a race against time to settle the paperwork for campaign expenses. But they were in the minority, as many other candidates had filed their returns much earlier. People’s Action Party MP for Joo Chiat, Charles Chong, said he filed his expense report two weeks ago. He had spent most of the S000 to S000 on postal services. Mr Chong said: “Mainly publication and postage of our campaign materials. I think for Joo Chiat, it was quite unique. 99 per cent of our constituencies comprise private housing and some of these condominiums that we did not have access to. “So we had no choice but to post our campaign materials to them, to every household, so that was our major item on our expenditure.” Those filing on the last day included candidates from the Singapore Democratic Party and Singapore Democratic Alliance. SDP candidate Gerald Sng came to file for his team in Sembawang GRC, while Mohd Shafni from SDA filed for his Pasir Ris Punggol Team – with expenses reaching about S000. The Workers’ Party Aljunied GRC team was represented by two election agents, namely Mr Tan Soon Meng and Ms Ng Swee Bee. They said expenses for the five new MPs’ campaign came up to a “six-figure” sum that was “comfortably within limits”. Candidates can spend up to S.50 per voter.
